Charnel House

A Romanesque portal stands in front of the church as a reminder of the former round charnel house from the late 12th century. The charnel house once stood near the church in the cemetery.

In 1845, the charnel house was demolished as it was regarded as a “traffic obstacle”. The portal of the charnel house was preserved and initially displayed as an exhibit in the municipal lapidarium.

Later, it was installed as the entrance door to the meeting room in the former town hall (Wienerstraße 3), which also served as a registry office.

Now, once again, it is located near its original site.

What is a charnel house?

An ossuary is a covered space intended for the storage of bones. The term “charnel house” refers to a chapel also used as an ossuary.

A charnel house was built near churches for depositing bones that were unearthed while digging graves. Human skeletal remains (skulls and other bones) were stored in this vault or building.
