Bahnhofstraße 10 | Gasthof Zum Weißen Rößl

History

From the 17th century onwards, a kettle beer brewery operated at this site, as recorded in archival sources.

In the 19th century, the premises also acquired the legal right to serve beer and to operate as an inn.

In 1929, the ground floor was remodelled.

Architectural Description

U-Shaped Ground Plan

The property presents itself as an elongated corner building erected on an irregular U-shaped ground plan, with a structural core dating back to the medieval period.

Three Medieval Construction Phases

Changes in the alignment of the west wing reveal three medieval construction phases. The southernmost section likely dates from the 14th century, indicated by its unusually thick walls of around 1.5 metres.

Horizontal Articulation

The facades are clearly structured horizontally by a moulded string course and a broad eaves cove.

Ground-Floor Facade

The ground-floor facade, originally dating from the 19th century, was redesigned in 1929. As part of these alterations, flat-arched portals and windows were installed.

Upper-Floor Windows

The upper-floor windows are set flush with the exterior wall and feature plain plaster surrounds and straight moulded window pediments. They date from the 19th century.

In the fourth axis from the left, a coupled Renaissance window from the second half of the 16th century has been preserved.  It comprises two moulded round arches resting on a central column and flanked by channelled pilasters with Ionic capitals. The straight moulded lintel extends up into the eaves cove.

Facade facing Salzburger Gasse

Facing Salzburger Gasse, the facade follows a curvilinear alignment.

Roof

The building is crowned by a hipped roof with a fire-wall gable.
