Bahnhofstraße 5 | Townhouse

This two-storey corner townhouse, located at the junction of Bahnhofstraße and Fürstenhofgasse, forms a distinctive part of Friesach’s historical streetscape.

History

In the 18th century, the house was owned by a night watchman.

Later, in the 19th century, it belonged to a grocer.

In 1986, the Seidl Bakery (Bäckerei Seidl) moved its retail bakery business from Herrengasse to this building (Bahnhofstraße 5).

Architectural History

The building is a two-winged complex dating from the 14th century.

It was rebuilt in the 16th century.

Further alterations took place in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The most recent alterations were carried out in 1986.

Exterior

Facade

The plain facade is painted in a soft peach tone.

A plain white cornice band separates the two floors.

The basket-arched windows on the ground floor are positioned in keeping with the original layout of the openings. White plaster surrounds frame the doors and windows.

The upper floor displays rectangular windows, framed by white surrounds with dark wooden shutters.

Plinth Zone

A distinct plinth zone protects the base of the building.

Roof

The building is crowned by a hipped roof clad in dark tiles.

A dormer window faces Bahnhofstraße and punctuates the roofline.

The eaves of the roof project prominently.

Soffit and Roof Cornice

A wide soffit merges seamlessly with a crowning cornice band.
