Heidentor
(Former Fortified Gate Tower)

The “Heidentor” was one of the five gates of the fortification system of medieval Friesach.

The gate faced south-west, and remnants of the wall and steps can still be seen today.

Defence

The fortified gate tower protected the south-western section of the town wall.

Miniature Museum Reconstruction

A miniature reconstruction of Friesach is displayed on the second floor of the Kapellenturm Museum. It includes a scale model of the Heidentor gate tower.

Description of the Miniature Gate Tower

The gate tower has a cuboidal form.

Its lower storeys are constructed of stone, while the upper storey displays half-timbered wall framing.

Access to the old town is through an arched doorway.

The structure is topped with a hipped roof.
