Burgbau Friesach Experience
Building a Medieval Castle
In the southern part of Friesach – Carinthia’s oldest town – a remarkable historical experiment is taking place across an area of 6.5 hectares. Here, a medieval castle is being built entirely by hand, using only techniques and tools available in the Middle Ages. No modern machinery, motors, or electricity are used – the work depends solely on human skill, craftsmanship, and animal power. Achieving the greatest possible authenticity is the central aim of the project.
Only natural materials such as wood, stone, lime, sand, and water are employed. The project recreates over four centuries of building history, from the Romanesque to the Late-Gothic period.
The master plan of the emerging castle complex includes a keep, living quarters, a chapel, a bailey, a castle garden, and curtain walls with gates and towers.
During your visit, you can watch traditional craftspeople – including blacksmiths, stonemasons, carpenters, bricklayers, and basket weavers – at work.
Guided tours offer fascinating insights into their methods, bringing to life the demanding yet inspiring daily routine of a medieval construction site.
